Moving To or From Indiana With an Active SR-22

An SR-22 filing is tied to your driving record and your state's requirement, not to the address on your policy — so moving while one is active adds a step most people don't expect.

Moving to Indiana with an out-of-state SR-22

If you already have an SR-22 requirement from another state and you're relocating to Indiana, your existing filing generally doesn't just transfer automatically. You'll typically need an Indiana-licensed carrier to file a new SR-22 with the Indiana BMV, and your new policy needs to meet Indiana's coverage requirements going forward. Working with a local, Indiana-licensed agency during this transition helps make sure the new filing actually gets submitted correctly and on time.

Moving out of Indiana with an active filing

The reverse situation works similarly. If you have an Indiana SR-22 requirement and you're moving to another state, you'll generally need your new state's equivalent filing (which may be an SR-22 or, in a small number of states, an FR-44 — see our SR-22 vs. FR-44 post for the difference) picked up through a carrier licensed in your new state. The original Indiana requirement doesn't disappear just because you've moved; it needs to be handled as part of the transition.

Why timing matters here

Because the state is notified if your SR-22-backed policy lapses, any gap between canceling your old-state coverage and getting new coverage filed in your destination state can trigger the same lapse consequences as missing a payment. Coordinating the switch so there's no gap in coverage is the single most important part of moving with an active filing. Our post on what happens if your SR-22 lapses covers why that gap matters.

What to have ready

Before you move, know your SR-22 reason, how much longer your filing period runs, and your current policy's coverage limits. Having this on hand makes it much faster for a new agent to get you filed correctly in your new state without a gap.
